Welcome
Joint Statement from Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) – Operational Experts Group (OEG) Meeting in Rome (October 2022)
The meeting of the Operational Experts Group of the Proliferation Security Initiative, under Italian chairmanship, was held in Rome at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from October 26 to 28, 2022. Delegations from PSI endorsing Countries, composed of experts from the Foreign Affairs Administrations, as well as Customs and Defense Authorities, attended the meeting.
In the first two days of work, there were two plenary sessions and four working groups, in which issues related to international cooperation in the interception of transfers of dual-use goods and proliferating materials were addressed, and an in-depth analysis of the multiple dimensions of security at stake was conducted. On the third day, delegations attended a demonstration at the port of Civitavecchia, involving a scenario of intercepting a suspicious cargo on board a destroyer (ship Caio Duilio) provided by the Italian Navy. The demonstration was carried out with the support of the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency, the Fire Department, the Law Enforcement National Bureau, and the Coast Guard.
The OEG meeting, which was postponed for the past two years due to the pandemic emergency, provided an opportunity to reengage in presence with States Parties on global challenges in the area of nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
